According to the available literature, originates in the regions of the Pacific islands and Southeast Asia, more especially in the nations of Indonesia and New Guinea. The breadfruit tree has been a part of culture in Polynesia from ancient times, when it was still found growing wild there. It was then brought to Europe by explorers.
Description
Breadfruit may be either round or oval in shape, depending on the species, and it is often rather huge in comparison to other types of fruit, since it can grow to be up to 30 inches in diameter and weigh anywhere from 2 to 4 kilograms. It has a green tint and a thick, rough texture, but as it gets older, the color of its bark may change to yellow instead of green.
The inside has an edible pulp with a naturally sweet taste, and its scent is persistent. Can contain seeds or not, and some types have more than 60 seeds that are about the same size as chestnuts. Other varieties do not have seeds.
